Is the Mizpah Hotel really haunted?

Is the Mizpah Hotel, a haunted hotel? Countless rumors say so. USA Today's Readers Poll has voted it the number one haunted hotel two years in a roll now.

We took a drive recently from Reno to Las Vegas, and I just had to check this hotel out for myself. It is known for its mining history and is considered the "Jewel of the Dessert,"

Tonopah, the city, was once an old mining ghost town that produced $250,000,000 in gold and silver. Driving through today, you can still see historic and abandoned buildings.

When we checked in to the hotel, I had no idea the construction took was over a mining shaft where miners had died. I had only read about the notorious "Lady in Red," children, and Key Pittman.

When we got to our room, my husband felt the presence of something paranormal. Perhaps it was the children messing with him, or Rose. But someone tapped him firmly on the shoulder when no else was around. He got creeped out.

If you check-in, just be prepared for spirits to roam the halls, flicker lights, and the elevator to open and shut its door on its own.

The Lady in Red
Mizpah Haunted Hotel Legend

Rose, The Lady in Red, was originally a prostitute who had become a kept woman by a local businessman. She lived in a suite on the 5th floor of the elegant hotel.

One day, her boyfriend planned to go out of town on business and left for the train station. The train got canceled, and he came back to the hotel to find Rose was in bed with another man. He became engaged, beat, and shot her in the hallway. Other stories say he strangled her.

Rose is said to haunt the 5th floor but is very lovely to guests if she likes them. In that case, she leaves a pearl on their bed. The hotel has named a room in the hotel, but it is not close to where the murder took place (outside Room 502). The room is called - Lady in Red Suite.

Rose, the leading spirit, is so well known, The Travel Channel’s Ghost Adventures featured her on their show (Season 5, Episode 2).

Curious about the Mizpah Hotel Ghost, check out video below from The Travel Channel, Ghost Adventures (Season 5, Episode 2). What really did happen in the Mizpah Hotel room 502?

The Mizpah Hotel history is full of stories. It was first a Saloon built in 1907, named after the Mizpah Mine. In its early years, it was considered the social hub of Tonopah, Nevada. Walking through the Saloon, you can quickly grasp the essence of the late victorian era. The elegant western parlor decor screams come in, sit, and drink away. In its day, it was considered the most luxurious and modern hotel in the southwestern United States. It sincerely looks like a movie set. The hotel is a member of the Historic Hotels of America.

There are many legends worthy of a visit, though a few rumors are denied. Wyatt Earp was said to manage the Saloon while Jack Dempsey, famed boxer, was the bouncer. Holy crap, I would have liked an invitation back to that party! The hotel has named two rooms in their honor.

I would really like to hear from you! Have you seen any ghosts or experienced any abnormal activity while staying at the Mizpah Hotel in Tonopah? Please drop me a note, thank you - Linda

I am not sure where my interest in haunted hotels began. I love the stories, anything with history is worth a visit, even tragic. I am also curious why haunted hotels seem to center around women? I have never seen a ghost, but I have witnesses orbs, and eerie feelings. Perhaps my day will come soon.
