Depending on the season, El Santuario de Chimayó, is absolutely stunning to visit. El Santuario de Chimayó during the early spring. Mass and Hours of Operation:When you visit the Roman Catholic Church in Chimayó, make sure you plan. El Santuario de Chimayó mass times are Monday through Saturday at 11:00 am, and Sunday at 10:30 am and noon. They close the Church at this time for visitors. El Santuario de Chimayó hours for visiting, except during mass times, are October to April 9 am to 5 pm (winter hours); May to September 9 am to 6 pm (summer hours). When you visit, you will find two chapels, gardens and outdoor prayer spaces, parking, information center and museum, two gift shops and a cafeteria. The neighboring streets, withing walking distance, also have a few gift shops and cafes. The El Santuario de Chimayó Shrine is a National Historic Landmark dating back to being built between 1814 and 1816. It is famous for the story of its founding and as a contemporary pilgrimage site. As mentioned previously, it receives almost 300,000 visitors per year and has been called one of the essential Catholic pilgrimages centers in the United States. The Pilgrimage to El Santuario de Chimayó is a momentous event for the whole community and small businesses that support it. I was totally in awe of the story, picturesque historical Church, art, and the El Santuario de Chimayó holy dirt. Many visitors hope of a miracle cures by eating the holy dirt directly while others rub it on themselves. It also makes a great souvenir, and the gift shop sells containers to hold it. The Church replaces the holy dirt in the Pocito (little well) from the nearby hillsides, sometimes more than once a day, for a total of about 25 or 30 tons a year. The Church takes no position on whether miracles have occurred at the Santuario. El Santuario de Chimayó gift shop has many beautiful items to purchase for yourself or as gifts. They have books, tote bags, jewelry, notecards, containers for holy water, and many other wonderful things. What you see above are El Santuario de Chimayó holy dirt containers and postcards. I purchased the container before I went inside El Santuario de Chimayó. They have little shovels also inside to help you fill your containers from the Pocito (little well). The Blessed Dirt containers cost $2.00 for the large, and $3.95 for the tin decorative container. Postcards were .50 cents each. I highly recommend dining at the James Beard award-winning Rancho de Chimayó restaurant nearby. The restaurant highlights local ingredients, especially green and red chilies. The restaurant is pictured below. Rancho de Chimayó Restaurant Shrimp Pesto Enchiladas at Rancho de Chimayó Restaurant El Santuario de Chimayó address is 15 Santuario Drive, Chimayo, NM, 87522. Their phone number is (505) 351-9961. For additional information on El Santuario de Chimayó, please visit their website here. AuthorMy interest in visiting churches comes from my mother. She particularly loved to visit California Missions, and I think she visited them all. She taught me to respect all religions and faiths, and I do. Like my mother, we both enjoy the history, architecture, and music. My mother passed away last year, and she would have enjoyed this post. I dedicate it to her. ArchivesCategories |
