El Santuario de Chimayó NM is an excellent day trip from Santa Fe, New Mexico. A must visit! Situated in the foothills of the Sangre de Cristo Mountains, the village of Chimayó, New Mexico is just 40 minutes from Santa Fe along The High Road to Taos Scenic Byway. The town of Chimayó is famous for its weavers and the Adobe Plaza del Cerro, which is the Southwest’s only surviving fortified plaza. The Santuario has become known by many names, including the “Lourdes of the Southwest.”

The Church attracts an estimated 300,000 visitors per year. The largest pilgrimage occurs on Holy Thursday and Good Friday when 30,000 people from all over the world visit El Santuario de Chimayó during Easter. Many walk 90 miles from Albuquerque to the Church.

The El Santuario de Chimayó Shrine is a National Historic Landmark dating back to being built between 1814 and 1816. It is famous for the story of its founding and as a contemporary pilgrimage site. As mentioned previously, it receives almost 300,000 visitors per year and has been called one of the essential Catholic pilgrimages centers in the United States. The Pilgrimage to El Santuario de Chimayó is a momentous event for the whole community and small businesses that support it.

I was totally in awe of the story, picturesque historical Church, art, and the El Santuario de Chimayó holy dirt. Many visitors hope of a miracle cures by eating the holy dirt directly while others rub it on themselves. It also makes a great souvenir, and the gift shop sells containers to hold it.

The Church replaces the holy dirt in the Pocito (little well) from the nearby hillsides, sometimes more than once a day, for a total of about 25 or 30 tons a year. The Church takes no position on whether miracles have occurred at the Santuario.

El Santuario de Chimayó gift shop has many beautiful items to purchase for yourself or as gifts. They have books, tote bags, jewelry, notecards, containers for holy water, and many other wonderful things. What you see above are El Santuario de Chimayó holy dirt containers and postcards. I purchased the container before I went inside El Santuario de Chimayó. They have little shovels also inside to help you fill your containers from the Pocito (little well). The Blessed Dirt containers cost $2.00 for the large, and $3.95 for the tin decorative container. Postcards were .50 cents each.

I highly recommend dining at the James Beard award-winning Rancho de Chimayó restaurant nearby. The restaurant highlights local ingredients, especially green and red chilies. The restaurant is pictured below.

My interest in visiting churches comes from my mother. She particularly loved to visit California Missions, and I think she visited them all. She taught me to respect all religions and faiths, and I do. Like my mother, we both enjoy the history, architecture, and music. My mother passed away last year, and she would have enjoyed this post. I dedicate it to her.
